It was as he suspec--a lake?
Ahote turned eyes on the boy with a little more interest now.
Where there was lots of water, there was bound to be fish...ever since returning from his trek north, where still it was winter, he'd not had many chances to go fishing.

"Traveling," he answered.
"I come from far south."
And he pointed south.
"Over ocean."
Well, there was a bit more to the story than that...he'd been wandering all over the place, here and back again, but it was from a distant southern island that he hailed.
It was easier to say where he'd been born rather than to explain all of that, especially seeing as how English wasn't his first language.

Looking again at the forest and mountains across the plains, he heaved a soft sigh.
Even though the weather was warm again, the plant life--indeed, the landscape itself--was still all so different from his homelands.
This pyramid was the first familiar thing he'd seen in ages; a curious happenstance, he reflected, but nothing more than that.

"Show lake?" he asked after a moment, glancing at the boy.

Toppi’s eyes followed Ahote’s point and continued outward to gaze southward in awe. “Over the ocean...?” he wondered what lied all the way out there. But then he was broken out of his daydream by Ahote’s request. The boy raised his index finger to awkwardly scratch at his cheek. “S-sure, I can take you to the lake. That should be fine” he said between anxious laughter. Something made him slightly uncomfortable, but maybe it was just the act of taking a stranger to his home?

Regardless he would step into the forest and look back to Ahote. “Let’s go!” Toppi waved him on with a smile. Should Ahote follow, Toppi would lead him deep in the forest. And just when it seemed like the walking would never stop, the pair would hit a clearing. It was a pretty big lake, it took up most of the space within the clearing. The only other thing of note was a modest shrine-like home. The architecture was very Japanese in appearance. “This is home” the boy beamed, he didn’t have visitors often.

Ahote could hear and understand the nervousness, following at a respectful--and safe--distance
Although the boy was only a child, the boy had been surviving on his own for a while (supposedly, at least), so he almost expected complete refusal of an utter stranger barging in near his home.
Either that or a trap.

He kept more of an eye on his feet than the path ahead, wanting to make sure there were no tripwires or nets or signs of hidden tribesmen or anything of the like.
Ahote lingered on the edge of the forest where it thinned out partly to reveal a big lake that took up most of the clearing's space, glancing around before stepping out.

After a good look at the lake, his gaze wandered over to the boy's home as he pointed it out, its architecture somewhat reminiscent of some towns he'd passed further in the north.
"I see," he said again in a flat voice, sounding neither impressed nor surprised--well, maybe a little of the latter.

For a boy living out in the woods, even if it was a modest house, the fact that it was a recognizeable shelter at all was of some note.
Perhaps he'd merely found the shrine abandoned and taken it as his own.

Ahote scratched his head, careful not to move too close to the structure as he walked around it to examine the lake more closely.
He'd kinda...given all his food to the kid, so if there were fish that'd be a great help for tomorrow.

The area was very quiet, there was no sign of other people. The front sliding door of the home was even left open (probably easy to do without a mother yelling about living in barns and such). There was no clear sign of anyone else being in the house. However there was a small garden on the side of the home as well as some basic amenities like a tanning rack and a simple foot pedal operated whetstone machine. It was all kind of quaint. Though probably not at all unusual in Eokia.

As Ahote approached the lake, one could notice that there was a strange… stillness about the water. Despite the wind, there seemed to be no movement in the water whats-so-ever. It was still, like a pane of dark blue glass. Which was another thing that was a little strange. The waters seemed dark, really dark for a lake. It would be an understatement to say that something didn’t seem quite right about the lake. Toppi popped up nervously as Ahote continued to approach the lake. But he quickly tried to hide any kind of panicked behavior. “Yeah, the lake… it’s nothing special...” the boy said with a weak laugh.

Ahote eyed the kid when he made a squeak of a laugh.
There was certainly something...off about the lake, and that laugh did sound veerrryyyy suspect.
Instantly the man was on alert, though for what he did not know.

He began to back away from the shore, asking, "Funny?"

“N-no no, it’s just...” as the boy trailed off his arms raised. Pantomiming his attempted dismissal by waving them side to side in front of himself. But then the boy saw Ahote’s obvious concern. Toppi just hung his head and let out a deep breath. “That’s granny’s lake” the boy said with some resistance, forcing the words out as if he was telling some big secret. He slowly lifted his head up. First looking towards the lake and then to Ahote. He wasn't sure what else to say, or what else he should say. So he waited for the man's reaction.

"Granny's lake"?
Ahote furrowed his brow and was immediately stepping away faster than before.

Nope.
No.
Nada.

He wasn't having NONE OF THAT.

It didn't even cross Ahote's mind that the boy could be teasing him or playing some sort of a prank or even simply speaking metaphorically: instantly his suspicions had shot through the roof, he was turning on his heels and heading for the trees without so much as a glance back.

"Adiós," he said as he passed the boy, eyes fixed stolidly on the path ahead.

“You brought a visitor, Toppi?” a disembodied voice rang out as soon as Ahote turned to make his leave. It sounded like it was coming from all directions. It was a woman’s voice, smooth and velvety. The kind of voice one might imagine a jazz singer to have. “Don’t leave so early young man. I have a favor- no… a job I would like to know if you’re interested in” just as her words ended something shot up out of the lake. It was propelled with such force that it beelined out towards Ahote and would stop in his pathway back to the forest. It was a barrel and it had been rolling on its side.

But as soon as it was a few paces in front of Ahote, it stopped and flipped upright as if moved by unseen hands. If inspected it would be easy to see what was inside of the barrel. It was loaded with fish! Big, fat, healthy fish. It was as if she(it?) knew what Ahote was thinking. Or perhaps she was watching the pair from the beginning? Or maybe it was just a safe assumption that a traveler would need food. However, the strangest thing about this all, was that the barrel is not wet at all despite flying out of a lake. Toppi made a comment about Ahote being nice, and the mystery woman just replied with a, "Is that right?".

ogodogodogod

Ahote froze the second he heard the voice, glancing around for a few moments before realizing it was the absolute worst kind of voice: the disembodied kind.
A disembodied voice that sounded ready to burst out in song.
Deadly, deadly song.

He was pretty sure he was going to die on the spot, right then and there.

Ahote was jolted back into action as something shot out of the lake, ducking out of the way of an object he perceived to be barreling straight towards him.
...Heh--barrel.

He stepped back as it stopped in front of him, then, cautiously, took another step forward once it had settled, peering inside.
He jerked back twice as fast.

Fish; it was full of fish.

It was all too eerie for his taste.

Yet, instead of declining right away, Ahote actually turned and looked to the child for guidance.

Toppi was smiling when Ahote turned to him. A smile that eluded to the fact that maybe things could’ve been going a lot worse. The disembodied voice took Ahote’s silence as a sign of interests. “I need you to take Toppi to Delmarsh. We have business there but the boy has never traveled that far, so you understand my concern, I’m sure” she ended with a little laugh, the kind through a close mouth “hmhmhm”. Toppi perked up with obvious excitement. “Business?” Toppi immediately asked. “You’ll know when you get there, darling” the floating voice answered. The lady wasn’t going to give Ahote much of a chance to decline before trying to sway him, “What do you desire? In return I will compensate you, whatever you feel this task is worth”. Her voice had an air of authority, yet was also somehow comforting and soothing.
