The trees thinned out and ahead stretched a long, wide, flat plain backed by steep cliff walls.
In the middle of the plain there jutted out from the ground an ancient structure, carved limestone that was curtained by sheets of hanging moss, its flat top dusted down with dirt that sprouted the same grass surrounding it.

The man with skin painted in labyrinthine tattoos stepped out from beneath the trees, grass wet with morning dew bending under his calloused feet.
The wind swept freely through this landscape, rustling the breechcloth roped to his waist, causing a clatter among the wooden objects tied loosely about his lean body.

There was a notable silence to the air.
It was dry but warm here, as in the subtropics or summer, but neither birds nor bugs could be heard singing to the rising sun.

Ahote could feel his skin pricking as he drew closer to the crumbling step pyramid, pulling the bow from his back with an arrow following close behind it.
With great caution he circled the pyramid at a distance, dusty brown eyes scanning closely for anything out of the ordinary.

Finding nothing he began a careful yet hasty ascent, pushing himself to the top where so much soil had gathered.
He paused at the edge of the last step, waiting, listening--hearing, seeing nothing.
He took a deep breath, passed through the grass to the other side, waited a few more moments, then at last sat down on a ledge.

The country looked beautiful from up here.

A strained, tired smile curled up the corners of his lips, his face slowly relaxing with the expression.
He put his bow and the arrow down to one side, now tugging a second cloth from his waist and letting it unfurl to the other side of him.

Inside it was a clay bowl, some small corked wooden cylinders, and a collection of wild berries, tubers, and sundried strips of meat--jerky.
Untying also a waterskin from his waist-rope, he took a few deep swallows, then tossed in a handful of berries after that before picking up a strip of jerky, leaning back in repose as he let his nerves turn to ease, chewing the strip at length while watching the wind curl the forest edge.

The Wild Boy of Eokia

There was a light rustling from up above. Soon after Ahote took his seat and started his meal, a young boy came into the clearing. Hopping down from the trees above. He had been swinging through like a monkey, his usual means of travel. The high ground was almost always the safest. Following the same path the man had previously taken. Except he had a disappointed look on his face. The mouth of the boy was pulled tight to one corner. But he kept approaching, following the same footsteps Ahote had taken. There was no stealth at his approach, at this point he already knew he wasn't going to find lunch. But he was still curious, like always. He stopped at a distance close enough for conversation but far enough for safety. The wilderness has taught him to never fully let his guard down.

The boy sucked air through his teeth. Making that all too familiar sound of disapproval. “I thought you were lunch” the boy said, dejected. It definitely looked like he needed lunch. The boy was a scrawny thing, standing 4 and a half feet tall, if he was lucky. His body was covered in leathers and hides of various forest creatures. On his feet were a pair of black moccasins. They were simple, but looked comfortable. The boy seemed to have no other possessions. Except for a beat up old sword which dangled at his side. Colorful feathers had been tied to the bottom of the pommel for decoration.

But other than that the sword looked like shit. Like it has been used a lot, or neglected. At first glance one might assume that the sword is a katana, especially at this boy’s side. But studying it closer would reveal that it was a bit too short to be a katana. Being instead, a wakizashi. The boy’s wild hair swayed with the wind as he stood there, staring up towards the stranger, Ahote. The eyes of the boy darted to the stranger’s food. His stomach let out an involuntary growl as the boy moved his hand to cover it and dashed his eyes back up towards the man.

Ahote's muscles tensed almost as soon as he spotted movement below, instinctively reaching for his bow--but he stopped only moments later, recognizing the shape as that of a young boy.
Nothing for him to be worried about...right?

The man eyed the strange child carefully, taking in his ruffled appearance and short stature, his scrawny body donning the hides of various wild beasts.
He glanced over the sword at his side, a beat-up old thing that, although he knew so little about swords, still had him wondering how it hadn't yet crumbled to dust.

Ahote sighed, smiling soft and wryly at the boy's comment and grumbling belly.
"I see," he said with a chuckle caught in the back of his throat.
The child's state was all too familiar, and it didn't take an obvious hint for one to see what he wanted--or needed.

After picking a few things off the cloth for himself and rolling them to his hip, he pushed the whole thing towards the boy.
It was a silent offer, and once the foodstuff was at distance the man turned back around to stare back across the landscape, finishing off the jerky in his hand.

His eyes locked onto Ahote as he moved. There was an intenseness about this boy, or maybe he just lacked the social etiquette to not stare at people. He was wild and in the wild these things had different meanings. The boy hesitantly approached the food. He wasn't used to it, usually he had to work hard for his food in one way or another. But once he was on top of it, his hunger over took his doubt. It didn’t take long for him to start devouring it. Every few bites a small creature would pop it’s little head out from the neck hole of the boy’s clothes and take a bite of its own. The animal itself was an elongated tube-like thing with no arms or legs. It looked like a furry snake.

Between all of this he somehow managed a low, “Thanks...”. It was apprehensive, maybe a bit shy. But it was genuine. When the boy finished his meal, he would push himself back up to his feet and scan his dark eyes across the horizon. It most definitely was a beautiful view. And while the beauty wasn’t completely lost on him. Views like this weren’t new to him either. This was his home, plus he was small and reckless enough to get into some high up places.

Ahote finished off the jerky, uncorking one of the small wooden bottles with a sound of thanks in the background.
He mumbled a "de nada" before downing the bottle's contents in one go, glancing back over towards the child with a quirked brow upon seeing the strange animal that kept poking its head out of his shirt.
He'd taken all but one of the bottles from the cloth, which were filled with the fermenting juice of some of the same wildberries, stuffing the remainder into a pouch at his hip.

Once he heard the boy stand back up, he reached over to take his cloth and tie it back up around the rope at his waist.
He eyed the child curiously before asking bluntly, "Where are your parents," all while feeling like he already knew the answer.

The boy was idly pacing around, he had way too much energy. Though, that was an understatement. By the time Ahote packed up everything, he was on the edge of the ledge and teeter tottered. Swaying and balancing from one single leg to another. Playing a balancing act on the ledge that he made look too easy. The boy shrugged casually at the man’s question. “I never had parents. Not as far as I can remember, anyway” he smiled despite this. It’s hard to miss something you’ve never had. Though the boy has had surrogate parenting from various sources. None of which had ever been a constant in his life. At this point he would step back from the ledge and turn to Ahote. “What’s your name, mister?” it wasn’t everyday that he met someone so nice.

Ahote raised a brow at the child's words.
Never had parents?
It'd be a wonder how he could survive at all.
He had to have had something helping him along.

He watched as the child paced and teetered on the ledge, the muscles in his arms tensing should the boy appear to stumble; it became obvious for a brief moment that he was holding his breath, expecting the worst.

"Ahote," he answered in an exhale, relaxing now that the child had stepped away again.
"Your name?"

The boy looked at him and blinked a few times, “… Ahote...” he said to himself. Running the name through his mouth and chewing on it for a second. “My name?” the boy scratched at his the side of his head and paused for a moment. As if trying to think of what is name actually was. “Well, different people call me different things I suppose… But I guess my name is Toppi. That’s what I’m called the most at least” he said with another childish smile. “Oh!” the boy exclaimed before pulling the neck of his shirt open wider. “This is Kuro!” on cue, the little creature popped its head out. Now with a closer look it was clear that the animal had a small canine-like head.

Toppi...he could certainly say that he'd never heard the name before, yet at the same time it sounded too close to a certain word for comfort.
Ahote shook off his thoughts as the boy announced the name of the animal hidden in his shirt, and the man took pause to get a closer look at it.

It was almost like the weasels of the north--or a miniaturized version of one of those giant serpentine beasts.
With his luck, it'd be the stolen baby of one, and any minute one of them would come snarling onto the temple.

"Nice meeting...," Ahote said with a gentle smile to hide his worries, and it was with that one sentence that his broken English flickered briefly into sound.
He reached for his bow to pull it back over his shoulder, stuffing the arrow back into its quiver as he pushed himself back to his feet, curling the toes of one foot over the roof's ledge.

He gave a glance down while he began to step back towards the nearest set of stairs leading back down to the ground.
"Live here?" he asked the child, looking back his way again.

Toppi gave a wide smile and a friendly nod. It was indeed always nice to meet new people, especially ones that didn’t want to eat you… hopefully. The boy followed close behind Ahote while answering his question. “Yeah! I live by a big lake deeper in the forest”. “What about you?” the boy asked, he had never seen Ahote before. That he was sure of. And while this is a big place, he would still feel really silly if someone as nice as Ahote lived here without him even knowing it.

What was even more interesting to Toppi is if the man wasn’t from here. Especially if he was from far away. The boy had hardly seen much of the world outside of this forest(never mind any of the other, countless worlds beyond this one). But he thought about it every day. The boy had a heart for adventure. Something was going to call him to see the rest of this world one of these days. Sooner rather than later.
